“Respect for Human Rights and the Promotion of Democracy” is one of Switzerland’s five foreign policy goals. The country has a long humanitarian tradition and the protection of the rights that derive from human dignity, ensure peace and international stability.
Switzerland contributed to establish a Human Rights Council that the Commission on Human Rights. On 15 March 2006, when the UN General Assembly established the Human Rights Council, a body consisting of 47 members headquartered in Geneva. As the host country of the Human Rights Council, Switzerland is committed to provide the best possible conditions for the Council, the delegates of the states participating in the sessions, representatives of NGOs and of course the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
