As a starting signal to the this year's AAAS Annual Meeting, highly respected scientists of EPFL will present and demonstrate their groundbreaking advances in brain-computer interfaces.
Once considered science fiction, neuroprosthetics are now helping disabled persons rediscover — or experience for the first time — capacities that greatly improve quality of life. Through systems that monitor brain activity and translate it into actions, such as moving a wheelchair or selecting a letter from a virtual keyboard, people with disabilities are finding new ways of dealing with their particular challenges.
Introductory Remarks:
-The Honorable Manuel Sager, Swiss Ambassador to the United States of America
-Christian Simm, Executive Director of swissnex San Francisco
-Jérôme Grosse, Communication Director EPFL
Speakers:
-Prof. Miguel Nicolesis, M.D., Ph.D. Duke University Medical Center and EPFL
-Dr. José del R. Millán, Defitech Professor, Defitech Chair in Non-Invasive Brain-Machine Interface, Center for Neuroprosthetics at EPFL
-Prof. Olaf Blanke, M.D., Ph.D., Loboratory of Cognitive Neuroscience/Brain-Mind Institute at EPFL
followed by demonstrations of some actual applications of their findings.
