HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. EULER
APRIL 16, 2007
BOSTON, MA

And what a party it was! It was a first for all of us and definitely not your average birthday party: the 300th anniversary of Leonhard Euler. Who would have thought that over 90 guests could get this excited and enthusiastic about an old Swiss guy? It must have been the magic formula of "pop music" from Euler's times, the delicious Swiss-made birthday cake, the poster exhibit, AND foremost Dominic Klyve's fantastic presentation.

Dominic took us on a journey back to the future and around the globe. We rediscovered the well-known formulas pi, i, e, cos, sin etc. as well as all the invention based on Euler's calculations such as cryptology, fluids, graph theory, elasticity, Latin squares etc. Equally capturing were Euler’s postings and travel encounters between Switzerland, Berlin and St. Petersburg. Being an enthusiastic workaholic, Euler's publications did not even fit on Dominic's two power point slide's (6 font size). Thanks to Dominic and his team, the impressive list of Euler’s publications (866) is easily and globally accessible through the Euler Archives: http://www.math.dartmouth.edu/~euler/

At the end of his presentation everyone wished they would have had such a wonderful teacher as Dominic. He has provided us with an all embracing insight, making one of Switzerland’s talents more famous and memorable to all of us. THANK YOU!

While SHARE Boston will continue its support for the Euler archives, your contribution would make a big different to their valuable work.
